GM will cut more than 1,700 jobs in EV and battery manufacturing

General Motors is reducing its workforce, impacting over 1,700 manufacturing jobs, due to shifts in the electric vehicle market. The company cited slower EV adoption and regulatory changes as the primary drivers behind this decision. GM remains committed to its US manufacturing presence, emphasizing investments in flexible operations. The layoffs are concentrated in Michigan, affecting EV production, and in Ohio, impacting a battery cell plant. Another 700 workers at a Tennessee Ultium Cells plant are facing temporary layoffs. The regulatory environment has changed since the expiration of a federal EV tax rebate. GM is also shifting its focus from hydrogen fuel cell research towards batteries and charging technologies. This restructuring comes despite prior statements about prioritizing batteries and EVs. These layoffs within the EV sector represent a significant adjustment for the automaker. GM believes its long-term strategy remains robust, though short-term challenges are evident.
