Netflix reportedly shutters studio behind Squid Game mobile spinoff

Netflix is reportedly closing its Boss Fight Entertainment game development studio, which it acquired in 2022. The studio has been responsible for developing games such as Squid Game: Unleashed and Netflix Stories. Despite the success of Squid Game: Unleashed, which has garnered over ten million downloads on the Google Play Store, the studio is being shut down. The game had recently received a major software update to coincide with the third season of the show. Boss Fight Entertainment has around 80 staffers, and it is unclear whether they will be laid off or reassigned within Netflix's gaming division. Several designers at the company have expressed disappointment and frustration over the closure, citing projects that will now never see the light of day. Design director Damion Schubert expressed regret on LinkedIn, stating that the world will never get to see some of the projects that were in development. This is the second game development studio that Netflix has closed in the past year, following the shutdown of its AAA game studio Team Blue. The closure of Boss Fight Entertainment is seen as a surprise, given the success of Squid Game: Unleashed and the potential for future projects. Netflix has not yet commented on the closure, and it remains to be seen what will happen to the studio's employees and ongoing projects.
