Seeking a “Minimum Viable Softness”

This piece explores the dangers of rigid, linear thinking, exemplified by frameworks like the Double Diamond, and advocates for embracing a more fluid, interconnected approach. Lines, while seemingly ubiquitous and natural, are artificial constructs that categorize and divide, often obscuring the true complexity of reality. This linear thinking, perpetuated by managerialism and a focus on profit-driven solutions, can lead to unintended negative consequences, as illustrated by the example of the healthcare worker wellbeing project. The author criticizes the institutionalization and universalization of these frameworks, which prioritize efficiency and control over genuine understanding and inclusivity. In contrast to the rigid structure of soccer, the author presents the Afro-Brazilian martial art of Capoeira as an example of non-linear thinking in action. Capoeira, with its emphasis on fluidity, adaptability, and collective creation, embodies a way of being that transcends fixed boundaries and hierarchies. This exploration encourages a shift in perspective, urging us to challenge ingrained assumptions and embrace a state of "dis-orientation" where established structures become visible and open to change. This involves stepping outside of comfortable lines and navigating the unfamiliar, ultimately leading to a more inclusive and holistic way of understanding and interacting with the world. By recognizing the limitations of linear thinking and embracing fluidity, we can create space for genuine innovation and address complex challenges more effectively.
