Donald Trump’s nephew asks questions about racism in new memoir

Fred Trump III, Donald Trump's nephew, recounts an anecdote in his book where a young Donald Trump blamed Black people for vandalizing his car, using a racial slur. While Fred acknowledges some racially insensitive remarks by his family, he doesn't explicitly declare them racist. He also highlights other examples of alleged racial prejudice within the Trump family, such as his grandfather's anti-Black slur and the Central Park Five case. The inclusion of these anecdotes adds to the ongoing narrative of Trump's alleged racial insensitivity. Despite the book's revelations, Fred maintains that his uncle's invitation to join a golf club and financial contributions towards his son's medical fund show a softer side to Trump. However, Fred also recalls a cruel remark Trump made about his son's disability, suggesting a deep-seated belief in genetic superiority. Fred attributes many of the Trump family's negative traits, including narcissism and cruelty, to their dominating grandfather, who instilled a competitive and hostile environment. He also suggests that his father's struggles may have contributed to Trump's later success, as it fueled a desire to prove his worthiness. The book paints a vivid picture of toxic family dynamics, with constant belittling and cruel behavior, including an incident where Fred's grandmother wished him to die penniless. Despite the strained relationships, Fred and Trump remained in contact, with Trump seeking Fred's real estate advice even after losing the 2020 election. Fred believes Trump's refusal to accept the election results stems from an inability to tolerate defeat, and he also characterizes Trump as a coward for not following through on his promise to join the Capitol march on January 6th, 2021.
