Far-right in uproar after Israel detains reservists over Gaza detainee abuse

On July 29, chaos erupted at an Israeli military base holding Palestinian detainees, Sde Teiman, as far-right protesters rallied after nine reservists were detained for alleged detainee abuse. The reservists' detention sparked international scrutiny and domestic legal challenges over conditions inside Sde Teiman. Videos emerged of protesters entering the base, prompting condemnation from the Prime Minister and military officials. The incident highlights a pattern of abuse and torture of Palestinian prisoners, including beatings, denial of medical care, and sexual assault. The Israeli government previously reported detaining 4,000 Palestinians since the Gaza war, and rights groups have raised concerns about the Unlawful Combatants Law, which allows for administrative detention without trial. In response to legal challenges, authorities have begun transferring detainees to other facilities, but as of July 18, around 40 Gazan detainees remained at Sde Teiman. Rights groups continue to demand access to detainees and accountability for those responsible for the abuse.
