Google is introducing a new way to verify contact legitimacy within its messaging platform. This beta feature allows users to confirm identities via QR codes instead of manually comparing lengthy codes. The QR code system is designed to enhance the security of end-to-end encrypted RCS messages. Users can access this verification by tapping on a contact's name and then their details page. From there, they can choose to display their own QR code or scan a contact's code. Google emphasizes that these verification keys ensure message privacy between users. The older 80-digit code comparison method remains available as a backup. This move aligns with Google's broader strategy for unified public key verification across applications. The company also plans to implement QR codes for Gmail's SMS-based two-factor authentication. This change aims to simplify and secure user interactions.
