In Canada, two people have died and at least 10 others have fallen ill due to listeria infections linked to drinking nondairy milk products. The Canadian health department has urged consumers not to consume, sell, serve, or distribute over a dozen plant-based products by the brands Silk and Great Value. The recalled products include almond, coconut, and oat drinks distributed nationally. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is investigating the contamination and working to verify that recalled products are being removed from shops. Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an infection that can be fatal, especially for newborns, those over 60, and people with weakened immune systems. Danone, the French company that owns Silk, has expressed sympathy for those affected and is working with authorities to investigate the incident. The products linked to the infections were produced and distributed in Canada only.
