Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit the Midwest and Great Lakes region on Monday evening, with Chicago being in the center of the storm risk. The storms could produce wind gusts over 75 mph and a few tornadoes. Chicago experienced wind gusts of up to 70 mph on Sunday night, causing tree limbs and a few trees to fall. A brief tornado was confirmed by radar in the far southwest suburbs. The storms on Monday could be even more intense than Sunday's, with hail up to golf-ball size and damaging winds. A low-pressure system will pass north of Lake Michigan, triggering severe storms ahead of it. The storms may also produce short-lived tornadoes on the leading edge of the squall line. The National Weather Service will issue watches and warnings as necessary, and wireless emergency alerts will activate smartphones if a storm is deemed "destructive."
