Runway, a generative AI company, is accused of stealing content from YouTube channels without permission to train its models. The company's latest AI video generation tool, Gen-3, may have used copyrighted material from popular media companies like Pixar, Netflix, Disney, and Sony. A leaked document obtained by 404media shows spreadsheets with keywords and employee names, suggesting that employees were tasked with finding videos related to these keywords and scraping them from YouTube. The document also includes links to non-YouTube sources, including a website with pirated media. 404media attempted to use Gen-3 to generate videos based on the keywords found in the spreadsheet and was able to create clips similar in style to the associated content. Runway was part-funded by Google, which could lead to significant legal repercussions if the allegations are true. The issue of AI content theft is a complex one, and the model still appears to have issues, such as giving a cat human hands in a video created by Ars Technica.
