Meta partners with horror movie maker Blumhouse Productions to test Movie Gen

Meta has partnered with Blumhouse Productions to test its new generative AI video model, Movie Gen. Movie Gen can create realistic video and audio clips in response to user prompts, and Meta claims it can rival offerings from leading media generation startups. Blumhouse has selected filmmakers Aneesh Chaganty, the Spurlock Sisters, and Casey Affleck to try out Movie Gen and use clips generated by the tool in their short films. The partnership aims to showcase how Meta plans to collaborate with creative industries, which have expressed concerns around copyright and consent. Several groups of copyright owners have sued major tech companies, including Meta, over the unauthorized use of their works to train generative AI systems. Meta has argued its AI training is protected by the copyright doctrine of fair use. Despite this, Meta and other tech companies have shown a willingness to pay for certain types of content for AI. Meta has struck deals with actors including Judi Dench, Kristen Bell, and John Cena to give voice to its Meta AI chatbot. Microsoft-backed OpenAI has also been meeting with Hollywood executives and agents to discuss possible partnerships involving its video generation tool Sora. The partnership between Meta and Blumhouse signals a shift towards collaboration between tech companies and the creative industry.
