A 17-year-old high school athlete, Austin Metcalf, was fatally stabbed in the heart at a track meet in Frisco, Texas, after telling another athlete, Karmelo Anthony, that he was in the wrong area. According to witnesses, Anthony grabbed his bag, opened it, and said "Touch me and see what happens" before Metcalf touched or pushed him, leading Anthony to produce a knife and deliver a fatal stab. Anthony admitted to the crime, stating he acted in self-defense because Metcalf "put his hand on me." Anthony has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held on a $1 million bond.
Anthony's family has raised over $211,000 in an online fundraiser, with many donors leaving messages describing Anthony as a victim of racism and bullying. The fundraiser's goal has been tripled to $300,000. In contrast, a GoFundMe fundraiser for Metcalf's family has raised over $250,000. Metcalf's family described him as a bright young man with a great future ahead of him, who was a team MVP and carried a 4.0 GPA.
Anthony's lawyer plans to plead self-defense, but the case may be difficult to win, as Anthony's statement does not suggest he reasonably feared death or major bodily harm. A jury may conclude that Anthony used deadly force merely to defend himself from being "dissed." Metcalf's twin brother witnessed the stabbing and attempted to stop the bleeding, describing the traumatic experience of watching his brother's soul leave his body.
