Judge lays out schedule in Trump's Jan. 6 case as election nears

A federal judge has set a schedule for former President Trump's election subversion case. The judge ruled that the upcoming 2024 presidential election is irrelevant to the case. Prosecutors will present arguments on September 26th, containing new information. Trump's team must respond by October 17th and can argue for dismissal based on presidential immunity. Prosecutors will have until October 29th to respond. Trump, who pleaded not guilty, was indicted in August 2023 for his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The Supreme Court ruled that presidents have immunity for "official acts," but left it to the trial court to determine if Trump's actions were official. The trial was postponed earlier this year.
