Study Shows 86% Increase In Sexual Violence On French Public Transport

There has been an 86% rise in sexual violence on public transport in France since 2016, largely attributed to mass migration. According to the National Observatory on Violence against Women, sexual violence in 2024 increased by 6% over the previous year and 9% over 2022 numbers. The majority of victims, 91%, were women, with 75% under the age of 30 and 36% being minors. 44% of victims were located in the Paris region. The data also shows that 63% of those arrested for sexual assault and 92% for petty theft in public transport were foreigners, according to 2019 data. Similar trends are seen in Germany, where 59% of all sexual assaults on German trains are attributed to foreigners. A study found that 56% of women were afraid to ride on public transport in the Ile-de-France rail network, while 80% said they were constantly on alert. The figures were released alongside statistics from the UK, which found that foreigners were responsible for nearly a quarter of recorded sex crimes. The National Observatory on Violence against Women notes that public spaces, particularly public transport networks, remain places where women are exposed to sexist and sexual violence. The rise in sexual violence on public transport has significant implications for women's safety and highlights the need for increased awareness and action.
