How one Chinese machine tool maker is helping Russia’s war against Ukraine

NATO accuses China of supporting Russia's war in Ukraine through the supply of dual-use equipment, including sophisticated machine tools. One such company is Shandong Oree Laser Technology Co., which exports fiber laser cutters to Russia, essential for producing military drones. While China denies providing military aid, its exports, including specialized electronics, enable Russia to bolster its military capabilities. The U.S. Treasury has sanctioned Oree Laser and dozens of other Chinese companies for supplying equipment to Russia's military-industrial base. China's exports of laser machine tools to Russia have doubled since 2022, demonstrating Russia's dependence on Chinese machine tools and components. Despite mounting Western pressure, Beijing has allowed companies to continue business with Russia. Oree Laser has expanded its operations and received support from local officials, highlighting the importance of its business with Russia. However, sanctions have resulted in the cancellation of Oree Laser's participation in an international trade show in Chicago. Some analysts suggest that sanctions may drive sanctioned companies to focus solely on Russia.
