Seth Michael Larson: GameCube Nintendo Classics and storage size

GameCube ISO files are typically around 1.3 GB due to the fixed capacity of the GameCube Game Disc format. This contrasts with cartridges that use memory mapping controllers, allowing for variable storage based on game size. The potential for large storage requirements on Switch due to the GameCube library size raised concerns. Data from the Nintendo Classics application on Switch reveals that "trimmed" GameCube ROMs are smaller than 1.3 GB. An early release featured three titles that only required 3.5 GB of storage. Games like Luigi's Mansion, which only uses about 100 MB of the original disc, showcase the potential for significant reduction. Animal Crossing's small size because it started as an N64 game further highlights this possibility. The future of multi-disc games on Nintendo Classics is uncertain but anticipated. Namco already has Soulcalibur II on Nintendo Classics, making them a good candidate to release the first multi-disc game. Games like Baten Kaitos Origins, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean or Tales of Symphonia are strong possibilities.
