Amazon says automation bug caused massive AWS outage

Amazon released a report detailing a significant outage on October 20 that affected numerous websites and services. The incident originated from a bug within DynamoDB, Amazon's data storage service for AWS customers. This bug caused an empty DNS record for Amazon's North Virginia data centers. DynamoDB, which normally handles such issues automatically, failed to resolve the problem independently. Consequently, Amazon had to intervene and fix the issue manually. During this time, all systems reliant on DynamoDB experienced DNS failures. This widespread failure impacted many of Amazon's own services, including Alexa, as well as numerous third-party services. Services like Bank of America, Snapchat, Reddit, and gaming platforms like Fortnite were among those affected. Some users experienced slow responses, while others found services completely inaccessible. Amazon has apologized for the impact and committed to learning from the event to improve service availability.
