America is building two AMD-powered supercomputers to re-create the sun and fight disease

The U.S. Department of Energy has partnered with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in a $1 billion deal to develop two powerful supercomputers. These supercomputers are designed to significantly advance scientific research, including areas like nuclear power and cancer treatment development. The collaboration aims to provide the U.S. government with substantial artificial intelligence computing power, exceeding current capabilities by threefold. These AI-powered systems will be housed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as part of a new public-private partnership. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright highlighted the importance of innovative partnerships for maintaining U.S. leadership in the AI race. AMD's stock has seen significant growth this year, fueled by such strategic collaborations. The first supercomputer, Lux AI, is expected to be operational by early 2026 and will be the first dedicated U.S. AI factory for science. Lux will accelerate work on critical national priorities like fusion energy and materials discovery. A second, more advanced supercomputer, Discovery, is slated for completion in 2028 and will surpass the performance of the current second-largest supercomputer. These supercomputers are expected to dramatically reduce discovery timelines in fields such as medicine, energy, and cybersecurity.
