AMD is collaborating with the US Department of Energy to establish sovereign AI supercomputers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. These supercomputers, named Lux and Discovery, are part of the Trump administration's AI Action Plan. A $1 billion investment from public and private sources is fueling the development of these systems. Lux, powered by AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs and EPYC CPUs, aims to be the first US AI Factory supercomputer by 2026. It will provide immediate AI capabilities and a competitive edge for the US in scientific innovation. Discovery, utilizing next-gen AMD EPYC CPUs and Instinct MI430X GPUs, is expected to be operational in 2029. Oak Ridge director Stephen Streiffer is confident that Discovery will accelerate scientific innovation significantly. Researchers hope for breakthroughs in areas like safer and cheaper nuclear energy generation. Both supercomputers aim to tackle challenges in energy, medicine, health, and national security.
