President Trump announced that an anonymous donor contributed $130 million to cover military troop pay shortfalls during the government shutdown. The donor, a friend of Trump's, wished to remain unnamed and sent the check to the federal government. This contribution was intended to address the financial impact on military personnel. Meanwhile, a bill known as the "Shutdown Fairness Act" was introduced to ensure that essential workers and troops are paid during shutdowns. This legislation, however, failed to pass the Senate, falling short of the required 60 votes. Senators Jon Ossoff, Raphael Warnock, and John Fetterman were among those who supported the bill. In response, Senators Chris Van Hollen and Gary Peters proposed an alternative bill, the "True Shutdown Fairness Act." Their proposal aimed to pay all federal workers and prevent Trump from firing employees during the shutdown. Johnson objected to Van Hollen's competing measure. Numerous attempts to temporarily fund and reopen the government have failed since the shutdown began. The current shutdown has become one of the longest in U.S. history.
