Apple may introduce LOFIC camera sensor technology to its iPhones in 2027. This advanced technology will significantly enhance photo detail in both bright and dark areas of a single image. LOFIC, or Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor, allows pixels to capture varying light levels based on scene brightness. It enables capturing detail in highlights and shadows simultaneously, potentially achieving up to 20 stops of dynamic range. This capability rivals high-end cinema cameras and approaches human vision's dynamic range. Chinese manufacturers like Honor, Xiaomi, and Huawei are expected to adopt LOFIC in 2026 flagship phones. OPPO and Vivo are also developing LOFIC-equipped models for next year. Apple revealed details of LOFIC in a patent filing, showcasing a stacked sensor design. The company has reportedly created a working prototype and is testing it. Apple currently uses Sony sensors, but their proprietary LOFIC sensor may offer improvements and a smaller footprint. This technology could debut in the 20th-anniversary iPhone, potentially alongside a radical redesign.
