As Texas Power Demand Surges, Solar, Wind and Storage Carry the Load

Texas electricity demand reached record highs in 2025, experiencing a significant surge of 23% since 2021. ERCOT, which serves most of the state, saw its demand climb 5% year-over-year to 372 terawatt hours. This rapid growth makes it the fastest-growing grid in the US. Renewable energy, particularly solar, is significantly contributing to meeting this increased demand. Utility-scale solar generation has quadrupled since 2021, reaching 45 terawatt hours from January to September. Wind power also continues to expand, with a 36% increase in generation compared to 2021. Together, wind and solar provided 36% of ERCOT's electricity during the first nine months of the year. Solar power has dramatically altered the daytime energy landscape, doubling midday output from 2023. This growth has led to a decrease in natural gas reliance during peak daylight hours. While natural gas remains the primary power source, its share in the generation mix is declining.
