Baristas are rallying at Starbucks stores across the country this weekend. Here’s why

Starbucks unionized workers are voting to authorize a strike, potentially impacting the busy pumpkin spice latte season. The union, Starbucks Workers United, represents over 12,000 workers across 650 stores, and is demanding improved pay, better hours, and a resolution to unfair labor practice charges. The union plans rallies and pickets at 60 locations this weekend, with voting on a strike authorization starting today. Starbucks has faced challenges, including store closures, layoffs, and unpopular uniform changes. CEO Brian Niccol implemented a "Back to Starbucks" plan and is overseeing a $1 billion restructuring plan. This plan includes closing 500 retail stores, with 59 of them unionized. Starbucks claims it already offers competitive pay and benefits, while the union asserts it walked away from the bargaining table. The company states they are prepared to negotiate if the union wants to return. This action does not currently involve any planned work stoppages.
