Delmonico’s Restaurant in New York, New York

Delmonico's, established in 1837 by Swiss brothers Peter and John Delmonico, is considered one of the first fine-dining restaurants in the United States. Located in Lower Manhattan, it pioneered a la carte menus and dining rooms accessible to women, previously luxuries for the wealthy. The restaurant became renowned for its innovative dishes and luxurious ambiance, attracting prominent figures like Mark Twain and several U.S. presidents. Chefs at Delmonico's created iconic dishes such as Lobster Newberg and Delmonico steak. It played a crucial role in shaping American dining culture by setting standards for sophisticated cuisine. Delmonico's thrived alongside New York City's growth, becoming a favorite for the city's elite. Despite multiple closures due to historical events, Delmonico's consistently resurrected; keeping its original splendor. Reopened in 2023 after a post-COVID refurbishment, it remains faithful to its 1800s origins. The Delmonico family's legacy is further cemented by their burial in the catacombs of the original Saint Patrick's Cathedral. Today, Delmonico's continues to celebrate classic American cuisine and its historical significance.
