Do AI Browsers Exist For You - or To Give AI Companies Data?

AI browsers like ChatGPT Atlas and Perplexity Comet present significant security, privacy, and usability trade-offs. Atlas is primarily designed for OpenAI to collect user data, as opposed to enhancing the user's browsing experience. These browsers are vulnerable to attacks where malicious websites can steal information from other sites where a user is logged in. Functionality is sacrificed, with basic browsing features often feeling like an afterthought compared to the AI capabilities. AI browsers lack essential features like vertical tabs, tab search, and customizable appearance options. Users may encounter AI limitations, such as usage limits and inaccuracies, hindering productivity. Usage patterns may lead to targeted advertising as companies seek to monetize free users. The security risks associated with AI integration make using them for sensitive accounts dangerous. Vivaldi has publicly stated they will not use LLMs or integrate AI until more rigorous security protocols are developed. Vivaldi prioritizes user autonomy and a safer web experience over the current AI browser trends and hype.
