Smart speakers initially promised intelligent companions, but progress was slow until the arrival of generative AI. Google is now releasing Gemini for Home, a new AI assistant, on compatible devices. This update allows users to experience more advanced conversational abilities.
The early access program requires checking speaker compatibility, as not all models support the full Gemini experience. Once activated, the device's Google Assistant is replaced by Gemini; downgrading isn't possible afterward. Accessing Gemini begins by requesting early access through the Google Home app.
Users might experience a waiting period before receiving a notification to set up Gemini. Upon setup, all compatible speakers in the home are upgraded. Users can then ask complex questions, similar to those posed to text-based chatbots.
Gemini Live, an integral feature, requires a Google Home Premium subscription. The standard and advanced subscription tiers offer different features, notably camera history search in the advanced tier. Gemini can answer factual questions, engage in dialogues about specific topics, and simplify complicated subjects. Although not fully realized, Gemini marks significant progress toward the initial vision of intelligent smart speaker assistants.
