GM Cuts 200 Jobs At Michigan Tech Center Days After Stronger Than Expected Earnings Report

General Motors laid off over 200 salaried employees, primarily at its Michigan Tech Center, citing business conditions. These cuts targeted overlapping roles in design engineering to streamline operations. The company explained the move was to strengthen core architectural design engineering capabilities, resulting in the elimination of CAD execution roles. This action is part of a broader strategy to improve profitability amid slower electric vehicle sales and tariffs. Recently, GM reported stronger-than-expected third-quarter earnings, exceeding expectations for both earnings per share and revenue. CEO Mary Barra expressed confidence in the company's trajectory and raised its full-year guidance for adjusted EBIT and EPS. GM now anticipates higher financial performance for the year and revised its expected tariff impact downward. The company also benefited from improved tariff updates announced by President Trump. Despite challenges with electric vehicle profitability, GM remains committed to electrification and sees a strong future for EVs. Strong sales of high-margin trucks and SUVs, along with gains in China and international markets, contributed significantly to GM's improved outlook.
