Iceland Is The World's Most Peaceful Country

Western and Central Europe are currently the most peaceful regions globally. This stands in contrast to a worldwide increase in conflict deaths, reaching a 25-year high. Militarization has also risen, reversing prior declines, while successful conflict resolution is at a 50-year low. The Global Peace Index 2025, compiled by the IEP, assessed 163 countries using 23 indicators of stability. Iceland has maintained its position as the most peaceful country for 17 consecutive years. Only 12 countries achieved a "Very High" peace rating, with nine of those in Western and Central Europe. New Zealand, Singapore, and Japan are notable exceptions outside this European dominance. Russia is ranked last, experiencing a significant decline in peace. Ukraine and Sudan also feature at the lower end of the index.
