Apple has released the first beta of iOS 26.2, which will enable alternative app marketplaces for users in Japan. This functionality was revealed by a user on X, who noted the ability to install AltStore PAL and Epic Games on iPhones running the beta in Japan, though Fortnite in-app purchases are currently region-blocked. Previously, Apple only permitted alternative app stores in the EU to comply with the Digital Markets Act. This change for Japan stems from legislation approved in June 2024, requiring Apple to allow third-party app stores and payment providers on iPhones. Furthermore, in August 2025, the Japan Fair Trade Commission established new guidelines under the Mobile Software Competition Act, prohibiting platform operators like Apple from restricting alternative app stores. These guidelines are set to take effect by December 18, 2025. Apple's iOS 26.2 is expected to be released publicly in December, aligning with these regulatory changes. Epic Games has already announced plans to bring Fortnite and its game store to iOS in Japan by late 2025, anticipating this development.
