A global jet engine shortage is hindering the growth of AI data centers, as hyperscalers compete for aeroderivative turbines. Companies like OpenAI and Amazon need these turbines to power their energy-intensive AI clusters. Turbine manufacturers face years-long lead times, with some orders not expected to be fulfilled until the late 2020s or even the 2030s. GE's LM6000 and LM2500 series, derived from jet engines, are becoming the preferred choice for rapid power generation. OpenAI's partner, Crusoe Energy, ordered a large number of turbines to power their "Stargate" project. Used jet engines from Boeing 767s are now being repurposed to supply electricity to data centers. Siemens Energy reports that a significant portion of their recent US gas turbine orders are for AI data centers. Regulators in some states approve extensive gas infrastructure projects linked to hyperscale data centers. The high demand for turbines is causing delivery delays, leading developers to pay substantial fees to secure future delivery slots.
