A homeowner in Mississippi shot and killed a research monkey that escaped following a semi-truck accident. The woman, Jessica Bond Ferguson, stated she acted to protect her children's safety after spotting the monkey near her home. Local authorities had instructed her to monitor the situation, but she feared the primate posed a threat. She shot the monkey after attempting to contact authorities again. The escaped monkey was one of three that evaded capture after the truck carrying them overturned last week. The truck was transporting 21 research monkeys from Tulane University to an out-of-state facility. The monkeys were infected with various viruses, although the university later stated they were not infectious. The accident occurred on Interstate 59 near Heidelberg, Mississippi. Authorities are still searching for the remaining two escaped monkeys and have warned the public to avoid contact. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.
