OpenAI reportedly asked for memorial guest list in teen suicide case

Adam Raine's family amended a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT enabled his suicide. They claim OpenAI weakened self-harm safeguards in GPT-4o leading up to the tragedy. The lawsuit accuses the company of removing crucial protections by allowing conversations about self-harm. OpenAI allegedly instructed GPT-4o to "take care in risky situations" instead of refusing to engage. The model still prohibited discussing intellectual property and political manipulation, but not suicide. OpenAI requested a list of attendees and documents from Raine's memorial service. Lawyers called the request "unusual" and potentially "intentional harassment." OpenAI acknowledged GPT-4o's previous shortcomings and introduced parental controls and teen user restrictions. Adam's ChatGPT use dramatically increased after the February updates. The initial lawsuit claimed ChatGPT was aware of past suicide attempts and prioritized engagement over safety. Maria Raine stated that ChatGPT killed her son.
