Queensland's Minister for Women, Fiona Simpson, has reinstated the traditional definition of a woman. This follows a previous change by the Labor government that broadened the definition. The prior definition encompassed anyone identifying as a woman, impacting the state's Women and Girls' Health Strategy. These changes emerged alongside alterations to the Human Rights Act, easing gender changes on birth certificates. Opposition to these changes came from the Liberal National Party (LNP) and the Katter Australian Party (KAP). KAP Leader Robbie Katter questioned Minister Simpson's definition and views on transgender individuals. Simpson clarified the department's use of "woman" and defined transgender identity. Information on how many birth certificate changes were made was also sought. The Attorney-General Deb Frecklington stated that data on gender changes isn't officially recorded. Guidelines for under-16s and over-16s seeking to change their birth certificate gender were also clarified.
