It is no secret that Belgians love their beer, the most popular drink in the country. It used to be even more popular in the past, as the average Belgian annually drank 200 liters of of beer in 1900, compared to 68 today. Likewise, while there are around 300 breweries in the country today, there were an astonishing 3,223 back in 1900!
Located in the former workshop of a school, the Schaerbeek Museum of Beer is dedicated to cataloguing Belgium's vast brewing history. Beyond just Stella Artois, its shelves are lined with over 2,000 bottles of Belgian beer, which the country's breweries have always preferred to cans. Even more impressive is the 5,000-plus custom beer glasses! Other aspects of beer culture are also documented, including advertising, beer-making machines, and even a recreation of an early-20th century pub. The Brasserie des Rocs brewery produces the special Schaerbeekoise brew for the museum, which is available in the museum's tavern.
