Syrian president expected to meet Trump at the White House, U.S. envoy says

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is scheduled to visit Washington on November 10 to meet President Trump. This marks the first-ever visit by a Syrian president to the White House, signifying a crucial step in restoring U.S.-Syrian relations. During the visit, al-Sharaa is expected to sign an agreement to join the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS. The Trump administration supports Congress permanently removing the "Caesar sanctions" imposed on Syria. These sanctions, enacted in 2020, target the Syrian regime and those doing business with it. The last visit by a senior Syrian official to the White House was in 1999. Following al-Sharaa's trip, a fifth round of U.S.-mediated negotiations between Israel and Syria is anticipated. The U.S. aims to achieve a security agreement on the border between Israel and Syria by year's end. Israel has already presented Syria with a proposal for a new security agreement.
