Trump killed a program that saved Americans $40 billion a year. This private company is rebuilding it

Mike Zatz, a long-time employee of the EPA's Energy Star program, left after early retirement offers spurred by Trump administration cuts. Zatz managed the commercial building side of Energy Star, a voluntary program saving Americans billions in energy costs. Trump's plan to shut down Energy Star threatened the program's future despite its bipartisan support and cost-effectiveness. Zatz now works for Measurabl, a sustainability data platform, aiming to broaden its customer base. He will leverage his experience with Portfolio Manager, a tool tracking energy use, to expand Measurabl globally. Tracking building energy use is vital for emissions reduction and cost savings, benefiting various stakeholders. While private companies like Measurabl are stepping up, they can't fully replace the government's role, especially regarding Portfolio Manager. Measurabl offers a free version of its software and integrates with Portfolio Manager, but also provides premium tools. Zatz hopes Portfolio Manager remains active, while using his experience to grow Measurabl's partnerships and global reach.
