Turkey's First Domestic-Made Main Battle Tank Enters Service, Erdogan Hails Defeat Of Embargoes

Turkey has delivered its first domestically produced Altay tanks to its armed forces, marking a significant milestone in its defense industry. President Erdogan inaugurated the BMC Ankara Tank and New Generation Armored Vehicles Production Facility where the tanks are being mass-produced. The Altay tank is Turkey's first homegrown main battle tank, representing a step toward self-sufficiency in military equipment. Extensive testing, including thousands of miles and live-fire exercises, preceded the delivery of the tanks. The Ankara facility has the capacity to manufacture eight Altay tanks and ten Altug armored vehicles monthly. Turkey's push for domestic defense production was incentivized by past European sanctions, particularly during periods of conflict with Kurdish forces. Erdogan emphasized the country's aim to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers for critical materials through the Altay tank project. Despite facing embargoes, Turkey aims to advance its defense capabilities and overcome obstacles. The Altay tank incorporates advanced systems like the VOLKAN-II fire control system and a laser warning system. The tank's capabilities enhance precision targeting, situational awareness, and crew coordination during combat.
