Wives, mothers, fighters, activists: the millennial women keeping Ukraine going

The young women of Ukraine born into independence after the fall of the Soviet Union have been thrust into roles of immense importance due to the Russian invasion. They are at the forefront of efforts to support their country, working in various capacities from fundraising to military service. These women also lead civil organizations and advocate globally for Ukraine. They have the freedom to choose whether to join the army or remain in the nation, unlike their male counterparts. The ongoing war forces them to confront difficult decisions, such as starting a family amidst constant uncertainty. Exhaustion, stress, and grief are pervasive in their lives as they cope with the consequences of the conflict. This cohort, largely in their 30s, are increasingly vital to holding Ukraine together. Their experiences reflect the resilience and adaptability of a generation shaped by revolution and war. The article focuses on the lives of six Ukrainian women aged 29 to 40. It examines how they are navigating their lives during this critical period in Ukrainian history.
