Kvilleken (Rumskulla Oak) in Sweden

The Rumskulla Oak, also known as Kvilleken, is an ancient oak tree located in Norra Kvill National Park in Sweden. It is estimated to be over 1,000 years old, making it one of Scandinavia's oldest and largest trees. The tree's existence was first documented between 1772 and 1774 by Magnus Gabriel Craelius. Despite facing hardships such as sabotages, larval infestations, and fungal damage, the oak has persevered. It has survived years beyond when some believed it would not recover. The Rumskulla Oak has a notable past, including a controversial scene filmed within its hollow trunk for the 1967 film I Am Curious (Yellow). This scene led to significant public debate and even reached the United States Supreme Court. Today, the tree's scandalous era is over. Protective measures, including supports, metal bands, and fences, have been implemented to ensure its preservation. The Rumskulla Oak continues to stand, a resilient testament to its long history.
