Tsunami warning tracker: Map and online tool let you follow alerts in real time after massive earthquake

A powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, becoming the sixth-largest ever recorded. This massive seismic event generated tsunami waves that have spread across the Pacific Ocean. The waves have already reached various coastal areas, prompting widespread tsunami warnings and advisories. These alerts are in effect for multiple U.S. states, including Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington. In Hawaii, residents were advised to evacuate coastal regions due to the potential for widespread inundation. Other countries such as Japan, Canada, and Chile have also issued warnings. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration provides a color-coded Tsunami Warning map to track these alerts. Red indicates a Tsunami Warning, signifying imminent widespread inundation and dangerous coastal flooding. Orange signifies a Tsunami Advisory, warning of strong currents or waves dangerous to those near the water. It is crucial for residents in affected coastal areas to stay informed about the latest alerts and understand the potential threats.
