Android Studio Narwhal Feature Drop introduces Gemini in Agent Mode to the stable release, enabling AI-powered complex coding task management. Developers can now assign multi-stage development goals to Gemini, which breaks them down into executable steps using IDE tools. Gemini's responses can be tailored using Project Rules in the prompt library for personalized code assistance. An experimental Studio Labs feature allows transforming Compose UI with natural language directly in the preview.
The update also enhances XR development with an embedded XR Android Emulator and a new Jetpack XR template. The Layout Inspector is now embedded and supports XR applications for UI debugging. Android Partner Device Labs are now integrated with Android Device Streaming, expanding device availability.
Jetpack Compose previews receive quality improvements, including better code navigation and a new preview picker. Android Studio now uses the K2 Kotlin compiler by default for improved performance. Support for 16 KB page sizes is enhanced with warnings, analysis tools, and an emulator for future hardware compatibility. A new services compatibility policy ensures timely updates for integrated Google services.
