DOGE Says It Has Helped Save Nearly $200 Billion

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), established under the Trump administration, claims to have saved nearly $200 billion. DOGE's reported savings of $199 billion equate to roughly $1,232 per person. These savings have been achieved through the termination of 12,426 federal contracts valued at approximately $53 billion and the cancellation of 15,488 grants totaling $44 billion. An additional $140 million was saved by terminating 384 federal leases. DOGE highlighted terminating 141 "wasteful contracts" saving $498 million, including examples from USAID and the Department of Health and Human Services. Tech billionaire Elon Musk previously assisted DOGE in its efforts to reduce federal waste and fraud. Musk departed the federal government after his special employee mandate ended. He later criticized a spending bill supported by Republicans, leading to a public dispute with former President Trump. Trump stated his desire for all US businesses, including Elon Musk's companies, to thrive and denied plans to cut their subsidies. Musk countered that the "subsidies" Trump mentioned do not exist, asserting SpaceX won NASA contracts by performing better at a lower cost. Trump had previously suggested DOGE would review federal subsidies received by Musk's companies. Musk had described the spending bill as a "disgusting abomination" before it was signed into law.
