AMD Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT review: Hitting NVIDIA where it hurts

AMD has released its new Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT graphics cards, which are more capable than their predecessors and offer competitive performance to NVIDIA's mid-range cards. The RX 9070 and 9070 XT are priced at $549 and $599, respectively, making them more affordable than NVIDIA's RTX 5070 Ti. The cards feature AMD's new RDNA 4 platform, which includes more powerful and efficient compute units, ray tracing accelerators, and AI accelerators. The RX 9070 XT has slightly higher clock speeds and more AI accelerators than the RX 9070. Both cards come with 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM, whereas NVIDIA's RTX 5070 has only 12GB of RAM. In testing, the RX 9070 and 9070 XT performed well in 4K and ray tracing, and AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) technology showed promise, although it still lags behind NVIDIA's DLSS. The cards also feature AMD's Fluid Motion Frames technology, which helps with frame generation. In benchmarks, the RX 9070 and 9070 XT held their own against NVIDIA's 5070 and 5070 Ti in most tests. Overall, the RX 9070 and 9070 XT are compelling alternatives to NVIDIA's mid-range cards, especially for 1440p gamers who occasionally dabble in 4K. However, it remains to be seen how AMD will build on the promise of its new features and technologies.
