Question on heating Cast Irons

I'm pretty confused on how pre-heating works compared to stainless steel. For stainless steel the test is fairly simple as you can test with water for the leidenfrost effect, but is there an equivalent for Cast Irons? Let's say I want to use a recipe that I usually make on stainless steel. Can I use the same heat settings or do I need to adjust since it's a different type of material? submitted by /u/la_plus
