An Eve of WWDC Spitball Theory on the Rumored New ‘Games’ App

9to5Mac reported on a new Apple project that combines App Store and Game Center features in one app. The app won't replace Game Center, but will integrate with users' Game Center profiles. The app will have multiple tabs, including "Play Now" for editorial content and game suggestions. Users will also see challenges, leaderboards, and achievements. Games from both the App Store and Apple Arcade will be featured. This new app might signal a change in policies for apps and games. Apple could establish different commission splits for apps and non-game apps. Games might keep the 70/30 commission split, while non-game apps get a new reduced rate. Having separate store apps for apps and games could help establish them as different markets. This could lead to different commission rates for small business developers and second-year subscriptions.
