Hollywood has been adapting pre-existing material into movies for decades, with comic books and video games being popular sources. Occasionally, Reddit posts are also used as inspiration for films. Recently, actress Sydney Sweeney acquired the film rights to a four-year-old Reddit post titled "I pretended to be a missing girl so I could rob her family." The post, written by a Massachusetts-based high school English teacher, tells the story of a girl who pretends to be a missing girl to rob her family. Warner Bros. won the rights to the film deal, with Sweeney set to star in and produce the adaptation. Oscar-winning scriptwriter Eric Roth is attached to write the screenplay. This is not the first time a Reddit post has been picked up for a movie adaptation, with Warner Bros. acquiring the rights to a post titled "Could I destroy the entire Roman Empire during the reign of Augustus if I traveled back in time with a modern U.S. Marine infantry battalion or MEU?" in 2011. However, just because a studio acquires the film rights to a project doesn't mean it will be made into a movie, as many projects get stuck in "development hell." Despite this, getting a project picked up by Hollywood is still a success, and Reddit may become a more popular source for movie ideas in the future.
