Representative Mark Green, a Republican from Tennessee, will resign from Congress to pursue a private sector opportunity. His departure will narrow House Speaker Mike Johnson's already slim Republican majority. Green initially intended to retire but stayed to advance Trump's border security measures. He believes he has accomplished this goal by overseeing the border security portion of the reconciliation package. Green will resign after the House votes on the final version of the Trump budget bill. Johnson and Green discussed Rep. Michael McCaul potentially taking over the Homeland Security Committee. The plan is for McCaul to chair the committee through 2026 to allow time for campaigning. Green's seat is considered safely Republican and expected to remain under GOP control. Following Green's resignation, Republicans will have a 219-212 majority, allowing them to lose only three votes on party-line bills.
