ProPublica's documentary "Before a Breath," directed by Nadia Sussman, premieres on YouTube on March 20th. The film portrays the experiences of three mothers who have suffered stillbirths and are advocating for safer pregnancies. The documentary highlights the significant number of stillbirths in the US, many of which are potentially preventable. Debbie Haine Vijayvergiya fights for the SHINE for Autumn Act after her daughter's stillbirth. Kanika Harris trains birth workers, sharing her loss of twins, Kodjo and Zindzi, as inspiration. Stephanie Lee, seeking answers about her daughter Elodie's stillbirth, faces another pregnancy with specialized care at Mount Sinai's Rainbow Clinic. The film is inspired by Duaa Eldeib's investigative journalism on this often-hidden topic. "Before a Breath" will also be distributed by The WNET Group and is a ProPublica production. The film will be available on ProPublica's YouTube channel and at thirteen.org after its premiere. A virtual panel discussion with the filmmakers and the film's participants will be held on April 2nd.
