Trump Admin Investigates University Of Wyoming For Allowing Males To Join Sorority

The Trump administration is investigating the University of Wyoming for allowing a male to join a women's sorority, which is an alleged violation of Title IX. The Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights launched the probe into the university regarding the incident. The university asserts it was not involved in the decision to induct the male member and is therefore not in violation of federal law. In 2022, the Kappa Kappa Gamma chapter at the university became the first women's sorority to welcome a male member, 21-year-old Artemis Langford. Langford was permitted to access sorority housing, which is an alleged violation of Title IX protections for designated female-only intimate and communal spaces. The incident spurred a three-year-legal battle, which is ongoing today, and the Department of Education contends that the university is still ultimately responsible to uphold Title IX. The university claims it does not control decisions about sorority and fraternity membership, but the Department of Education argues that the university must meet its obligations under Title IX to protect its students from sex-based harassment and sexual assault. Members of the sorority who previously sued the sorority are celebrating the administration's investigation, stating that they hope the case will bring clarity, accountability, and justice for all college sorority women. The university intends to fully cooperate with the investigation and will work with the Office for Civil Rights to come into compliance with Title IX if needed. The investigation is part of the Department of Education's initiatives for Title IX Month, which recognizes the fifty-third anniversary of Title IX of the Educational Amendments being signed into law.
