The German Federal Police have identified 12,858 illegal migrants who entered Germany by air in the past 12 months, a significant number that is on the rise. This increase in migrants flying into Germany jumped after Germany tightened border controls, with at least 977 illegal entries recorded using air travel in May alone. The true number of such crossings is likely much higher due to the lack of identification requirements for foreign nationals traveling within the Schengen area. As a result, many migrants are only discovered long after they have left the airport, making it impossible to turn them back. Heiko Teggatz, a board member of the German Police Union, has called for the notification of Schengen air borders to address this issue. Teggatz noted that smugglers can easily bring people from other Schengen states to Germany by plane without being detected. The information was revealed in a government response from Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt after an inquiry was launched by Alternative for Germany MP Gottfried Curio. Dobrindt acknowledged that tightened controls only refer to land borders, meaning no illegal migrants were turned back at airports. The trend of illegal entry by plane has intensified since the new federal government instructed officials to begin rejecting asylum seekers at internal borders, with medium-sized commercial airports like Hanover being particularly affected. Despite hundreds of officers being deployed at German airports, checks are almost exclusively conducted on flights from outside the Schengen area, leaving a significant loophole for migrants to enter the country undetected.
