Mike Lee Proposes Constitutional Amendment to Oust Congress When Deficit is Too High

Senator Mike Lee has proposed a constitutional amendment that would make all members of Congress ineligible to run for reelection if inflation exceeds 3% or the deficit exceeds 3% of gross domestic product. This idea was first suggested by Warren Buffett over 10 years ago as a way to end the deficit. Lee believes that disqualifying politicians is better than having the entire nation suffer under inflation. He is drafting the amendment and has asked for feedback on the idea. The proposal comes as Lee and other GOP Senators have pushed back against President Trump's tax reconciliation and spending cuts package, arguing it does not go far enough to reduce the national deficit. Lee has stated that federal spending has become excessive and harms Americans, and that the Senate must make the bill better. The practicality of removing all members of Congress from office at once is questionable, and it is unclear how much support the idea would receive from current lawmakers. The House of Representatives has passed President Trump's spending bill, which is now awaiting review and possible revision in the Senate. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has defended the Congressional spending bill, stating that spending must be brought down gradually to cut and constrain spending while growing the economy. Elon Musk has endorsed Warren Buffett's plan to fix the deficit crisis, and Republican leaders are pushing to complete work on the reconciliation bill by July 4, despite internal disagreements over federal spending cuts.
